The work of the UK NPM is coordinated by HM Inspectorate of Prisons (England and Wales). Representatives from all NPM members attend twice-yearly business meetings and communicate throughout the year about their NPM work, which follows an annual business plan. The NPM has an independent chair, appointed by its members.

Since the UK NPM began its work in 2009, it has created four sub-groups to provide specific focus on areas of detention, as well as Steering Group. These sub-groups feed into the work of the NPM as a whole, informing approaches and providing a space for sharing information and expertise. The Steering Group helps to facilitate decision making across the NPM.
